First ESHO Educational School on Clinical Hyperthermia, 7 & 8 April 2008, Munich, Germany

We are pleased to announce the first ESHO School on Clinical Hyperthermia on 7th and 8th April 2008 -prior to the ICHO 2008 (9-12 April 2008)- which will be held in Munich at the University Medical Center Grosshadern

Goals

  1. Provide basic knowledge on the clinical and technical application of regional hyperthermia in oncology
  2. Give new perspectives in the field of hyperthermia and translational research

Target audience

This educational activity is at an advanced level and is oriented towards medical doctors, specialists in oncology, including medical and radiation oncologists, but also engineers, technicians and biophysicists, who are already performing hyperthermia treatment or intent to start the application of hyperthermia in clinical practice. The ESHO school is also open to industry representatives.

Educational method and plan

The teaching program of the school consists of theoretical courses together with practical hands-on training. The didactic presentations will be given by highly recognized experts and will address:

  • Biological rationale of hyperthermia
  • Clinical results
  • Treatment protocols
  • Hyperthermia physics
  • Current hyperthermia equipment
  • Quality assurance and control
  • Hyperthermia treatment planning

The participants of the ESHO school must chose between a training module focused on the clinical application of hyperthermia or on a training module focused on the use of hyperthermia treatment planning.

Clinical teaching module: participants who select the clinical module will have the unique opportunity to attend a loco-regional hyperthermia treatment using one of the three BSD2000-3d systems (including a hybrid system with 0.2 T MRI) at the department of hyperthermia at the LMU-Grosshadern University Medical Center. In parallel there will be discussion of cases and a practical hands-on quality of assurance training. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience the SAR-steering capabilities of the BSD2000-3d, which visualize on-line the SAR pattern induced in a cylindrical phantom.

Treatment planning module: those participants selecting the hyperthermia treatment planning module will have an extensive and interactive hands-on training of treatment planning using the most advanced hyperthermia treatment planning systems (i.e. SigmaHyperplan® or SemcadX). All activities will be provided in small groups (max. 10 participants per group) with at least 3 lecturers per group to ensure optimal knowledge transfer.

At the end of the ESHO school following learning objectives will be achieved:

  1. Explain the biological rationale of hyperthermia when used in combination therapy
  2. Gain insight into the technical devices and thermomonitoring
  3. Explain the clinical trial evidence supporting the efficacy of combined hyperthermia
  4. Explore new interactions between preclinical/clinical studies
  5. Be able to perform treatment planning

Education credits

CME accreditation for physicians and CAMPEP accreditation for physicists will be given together with a certificate of attendance.
