Meeting Profile

The 2008 International Congress on Hyperthermic Oncology (ICHO) will be the 10th anniversary of this international meeting organized under the auspices of the International Association on Hyperthermic Oncology (IAHO). The IAHO is the umbrella organization for the Asian Society for Hyperthermic Oncology, the Society of Thermal Medicine and the European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology.

The late J. Eugene Robinson organized the first international symposium on cancer therapy by hyperthermia and radiation in 1975, Washington, USA. In 1977 Chris Streffer organized the second international meeting in Essen, Germany. From the third meeting in 1980 onwards the ICHO is organized every four years alternately in the USA, Europe and Asia.

The ICHO 2008 meeting aims at the participation of 400 persons. As in previous meetings the participants will be roughly equally divided among the disciplines, i.e. 1/3 biologist, 1/3 physicist- engineers and 1/3 medical specialists. A similar equal division is expected with regard to the distribution of the participants of the continents. Commitment of world experts in cancer treatment using hyperthermia and in the development of thermosensitive liposomes to participate in ICHO 2008 has already been obtained.

The growing interest in hyperthermia is clearly demonstrated by the increasing number of institutes buying hyperthermia equipment. Extensive growth of institutes applying hyperthermia has been reported for China. Also in Europe and in USA the number of institutes offering hyperthermia is growing steadily. The number of registered members of the ESHO shows a steep increase over the last five years (+50%).
